Allow forcing AAPT2 on Building with FORCE_AAPT2=true will turn on AAPT2 for all modules unless they set LOCAL_USE_AAPT2 := false. The build system will attempt to rewrite common AAPT patterns into AAPT2 patterns, including removing --extra-packages for support library packages, removing LOCAL_RESOURCE_DIR point to support library resources, adding a default empty manifest file if it doesn't exist, and converting LOCAL_STATIC_JAVA_AAR_LIBRARIES to LOCAL_STATIC_ANDROID_LIBRARIES. Move support library dependency munging earlier The presence of LOCAL_STATIC_ANDROID_LIBRARIES is used early to decide whether to move resources to overlays, and late to decide whether to add --auto-add-overlay. If support_libraries.mk moves the last LOCAL_STATIC_ANDROID_LIBRARIES value to LOCAL_STATIC_JAVA_LIBRARIES then the resources will be moved to overlays but --auto-add-overlay will not be added, causing aapt2 to fail with: error: resource bool/leanback_outline_clipping_disabled does not override an existing resource. note: define an <add-resource> tag or use --auto-add-overlay. Use product-based inclusive rule for enforcing RRO Board-based rule can cause unexpected regression because build-time overlays are different among products. So each product should be tested with its own product-based rule considering its build-time overlays before applying enforcing RRO. Additionally RRO conversion is mandatory only for overlays of which target is included in AOSP system image and is critical for CTS/VTS tests with AOSP system image. So inclusive rule is more suitable instead of exclusive rule to avoid unexpected regression due to unnecessary RRO conversion. Note that we still support conversion for all the overlays by specifying PRODUCT_ENFORCE_RRO_TARGETS as "*". Test: building succeeded and tested with auto-generated RROs. Fix using variable intermediates.COMMON before defining. In commit e9dd9f2bf we moved "include $(BUILD_SYSTEM)/android_manifest.mk" forward before the variable intermediates.COMMON gets defined. That's a mistake. This change replaced the tentative variables package_expected_intermediates_COMMON and guessed_intermediates with their proper counterparts defined in base_rules.mk. Separate java source list generation into its own rule Move the java source list generation step into its own rule. This has a couple of advantages. It consolidates the source list generation so that it only has to run once for javac, jack, and jack-check. It also massively reduces the length of the javac command line, so that error messages are significantly shorter, and allows easily rerunning the failing build command because the file list is still on disk. The primary disadvantage is that javac error messages no longer include the list of files passed to javac, but the list is available earlier in the build long when the file list was written, and is still available on disk. Running jarjar on Java resources. Before this change, Java resources are added as a separate step (add-java-resources-to-package) after dex is run, so jarjar isn't run on the resource files. With this change, we add Java resources immediately after we call javac, so jarjar is run on the resource files (the module's own resource, as well as resources carried by static Java libraries). When we generate the final apk/jar, we use the jarjar'ed jar as the inital pacakge file, with class files and empty folders removed. When jack is enabled, in jack-java-to-dex we add the Java resources to a temp jar using the PRIVATE_EXTRA_JAR_ARGS, and extrac the files in a temp dir. Jack will process the resource files and output the result to PRIVATE_JACK_INTERMEDIATES_DIR. When we package the final apk/jar, we need to call add-carried-jack-resources to readd the resources. Update rules to install JNI libraries. Previously we have to use LOCAL_REQUIRED_MODULES to install jni libraries for an apk in bundled build. Add back Java resources to apk without Java code. With commit 33360dd56925276e4526f5f52c26423e2bb1a670 we moved Java resource packaging forward to creation of the jar file. But the Java resource packaging will be skipped if a module has no Java code at all. (The build system does support building an apk without Java code.) Support to build dpi-specific apk variants. In unbundled apps_only build, in addition to the base apk, you can also build the dpi-specific apk variants, with: LOCAL_DPI_VARIANTS := <a list of dpi names> Previously user needs to include $(BUILD_PACKAGE) repeatedly with the same package definition except dpi flags. With this change, all the dpi-specific apk variants share the base apk's compiled Java code and only diverge at the point we add resources/assets to the apk. Do not run zipalign when building APK (except prebuilts). This changes the build system to no longer run zipalign except for those prebuilts which do not need to re-signed. Running zipalign is no longer needed because signapk takes care of alignment. For those prebuilts which do not need to be re-signed signapk is not invoked and thus zipalign is still needed because the prebuilts may not have been aligned properly. add support for module supported or unsupported target architectures Add four new variables for module makefiles: LOCAL_MODULE_TARGET_ARCH specifies that a module is only supported for one or more architectures. Any architecture not in the list will be not attempt to build the module. The expected use case is prebuilts that are only suitable for a single architecture, or modules like llvm that need per-architecture support. LOCAL_MODULE_UNSUPPORTED_TARGET_ARCH specifies that a module cannot be built for one or more architectures. LOCAL_MODULE_TARGET_ARCH_WARN and LOCAL_MODULE_UNSUPPORTED_TARGET_ARCH_WARN are the same, but warn that the arch is not supported, which is useful for modules that are critical but not yet working. Use product-based inclusive rule for enforcing RRO Board-based rule can cause unexpected regression because build-time overlays are different among products. So each product should be tested with its own product-based rule considering its build-time overlays before applying enforcing RRO. Additionally RRO conversion is mandatory only for overlays of which target is included in AOSP system image and is critical for CTS/VTS tests with AOSP system image. So inclusive rule is more suitable instead of exclusive rule to avoid unexpected regression due to unnecessary RRO conversion. Note that we still support conversion for all the overlays by specifying PRODUCT_ENFORCE_RRO_TARGETS as "*". Test: building succeeded and tested with auto-generated RROs.
